The Moon
Major Arcana · XVIII · Water
The territory of illusion, fear, and the unconscious that must be crossed in the dark.
Upright meaning
Two towers flank a path that leads between them into a dark landscape under a full moon. A crayfish emerges from the water; a wolf and dog howl at the moon's face. The Moon is the card of the territory between the known and the unknown where the light is pale and the shapes are ambiguous and fear fills the spaces where certainty used to be. The path through cannot be taken by knowledge alone; it requires trusting the direction while the details remain unclear.
Reversed meaning
The Moon reversed marks either the beginning of the clearing of confusion and fear — the pale light of recognition that the shapes in the dark were distortions, not dangers — or the deeper self-deception that keeps the illusion maintained. Something that has been lurking in the shadow is coming to the surface, which is ultimately clarifying even when it is disturbing.
