The Devil
Major Arcana · XV · Earth
The bondage that is chosen and maintained by the belief that choice has been removed.
Upright meaning
Two figures stand chained to the Devil's throne — but the chains around their necks are loose enough to slip over their heads. They have forgotten they can leave. The Devil is the card of the bondage that is maintained by the belief that it is inescapable: the addiction, the unhealthy relationship, the destructive pattern, the story that one has no agency. The chains are real in the sense that real behaviour produces real consequences. But the first link is always a thought that can be changed.
Reversed meaning
The Devil reversed marks the moment when the chains are actually being recognised as removable — when the illusion of inescapable bondage begins to crack and the question of genuine freedom can be asked. It can also mark the beginning of the painful process of detachment from something that has provided comfort even while imprisoning. Freedom is available, but it requires honest acknowledgement of what the bondage has been providing.
