Death
Major Arcana · XIII · Water
The ending that creates the only possible space for genuine new beginning.
Upright meaning
Death rides a white horse past figures of every station — pope, king, maiden, child — none immune to the scythe. But the sun rises in the distance behind the towers, and a boat crosses the water in the background. This is the most misunderstood card in the deck: it rarely speaks of literal death and almost always speaks of the ending of a phase, identity, relationship, or way of being that has exhausted its life. The ending it names is necessary. What is being released is already gone; the grief is real, and the space that opens is the point.
Reversed meaning
Death reversed marks the clinging to what has already ended — the refusal to allow the necessary completion of a chapter that is genuinely finished. The old form is maintained at the cost of everything that could grow in the space its departure would create. Grief is natural; the question is whether the grief has become a wall against the future rather than the natural passage through it.
