GET

/v1/chart/planets

All 9 planets with longitude/sign/nakshatra/pada/house.

What this tells you

This is the base endpoint for a birth chart. It returns all 9 grahas with sidereal longitude, sign, nakshatra and pada, whole-sign house, daily speed and retrograde flag. Rahu is the mean node and Ketu is exactly opposite. The ascendant is not part of this response: call /v1/chart/ascendant for it, or /v1/chart/astro-details to get planets and ascendant in one call.

Request

All requests require an Authorization header with your dv_live_* API key.

Field reference

Every field in the response, with its type, a real example, and what it means.

FieldTypeMeaning
datestring
Birth date you sent (YYYY-MM-DD), echoed back.
example: "1990-01-15"
timestring
Birth time you sent, echoed back. "12:00" when you leave `time` out.
example: "10:30"
tzstring
Timezone you sent (IANA name or fixed offset such as +05:30), echoed back.
example: "Asia/Kolkata"
locationobject
Birth coordinates used. `alt` is in metres and is 0 unless you send `alt`.
example: { "lat": 19.076, "lon": 72.8777, "alt": 0 }
ayanamsastring
Ayanamsa used. Default lahiri; set it with the `ayanamsa` parameter (lahiri, raman, krishnamurti, fagan, yukteshwar, true_chitrapaksha).
example: "lahiri"
ayanamsa_valuenumber
Ayanamsa in degrees at the birth moment. Sidereal longitude = tropical longitude − this value.
example: 23.71795
house_systemstring
Echo of the optional `house_system` parameter (default whole_sign). This endpoint does not use it, so you never need to send it; only /v1/chart/houses changes with it. Planet `house` numbers here are always whole-sign.
example: "whole_sign"
planets[]array of 9 objects
The 9 grahas, always in this order: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu.
example: [{ "id": "sun", "name": "Sun", … }, …]
planets[].idstring
Stable lowercase English key. It does not change with `locale`, so use it to match planets in code.
example: "sun"
planets[].namestring
Planet name. Translated when you pass `locale` (e.g. `?locale=hi`).
example: "Sun"
planets[].sidereal_lonnumber (0–360)
Sidereal longitude in degrees, with the chosen ayanamsa applied. Use this for your own chart math.
example: 271.063319
planets[].sign_indexinteger (0–11)
Sign: 0=Aries, 1=Taurus, …, 11=Pisces. No sign name is returned; map the index yourself.
example: 9
planets[].deg_in_signnumber (0–30)
Degrees inside the sign.
example: 1.063319
planets[].dms_in_signstring
Degrees, minutes and seconds inside the sign, for display.
example: "01°03'47\""
planets[].houseinteger (1–12)
Whole-sign house counted from the ascendant sign. Always whole-sign, even if you pass `house_system`.
example: 12
planets[].nakshatra_idxinteger (0–26)
Nakshatra: 0=Ashwini, 1=Bharani, …, 26=Revati.
example: 20
planets[].padainteger (1–4)
Quarter (pada) of the nakshatra.
example: 2
planets[].nak_lordstring
Vimshottari lord of the nakshatra. Translated with `locale`.
example: "Sun"
Jyotish: The Moon's nak_lord is the lord of the first Vimshottari mahadasha.
planets[].speednumber
Daily motion in longitude, in degrees per day. Negative means retrograde.
example: 1.018256
planets[].is_retroboolean
True when `speed` is negative. Rahu and Ketu (mean node) are always true.
example: false
planets[].ecl_latnumber
Geocentric ecliptic latitude in degrees (north positive). Decides a graha yuddha: the planet further north wins. Left out for Rahu and Ketu, which sit on the ecliptic.
example: -0.000088

Usage tips

How to use it

  • Cache forever per user
Birth data doesn't change. Hash date, time, tz, lat and lon (plus `ayanamsa` and `locale` if you send them) and cache the response.
  • Rendering a chart
North Indian diamond: the houses are fixed, so place each planet by `house` (1–12). South Indian square: the signs are fixed, so place each planet by `sign_index` and mark the ascendant sign from /v1/chart/ascendant.
  • Retrograde symbol
Show a small "℞" next to planets where `is_retro` is true. Rahu and Ketu always come back retrograde.
  • Names and locale
The response has `sign_index` and `nakshatra_idx` but no sign or nakshatra names; map them in your app. `?locale=hi` (also mr, ta, te, kn, ml, bn, gu, pa) translates `name` and `nak_lord`. `id` always stays English.
  • Topocentric Moon
The Moon is geocentric by default. Pass `topocentric_moon=true` to compute it as seen from the birth location.
